Description
Here we have a most unique Christian relic and reliquary. Some history: In the year 312ad.the Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity. During 325ad The Council of Nicaea was held, which established the basic beliefs of the Christian religion. In 327ad Constantine's mother, Saint Helena went to Palestine in order to find original relics relating to the time of Christ. It was on this journey she is attributed with finding the True Cross, as well as the nails used to crucify Jesus Christ. These holy relics were taken back to Rome. During the late 1800's the Vatican had replicas made of the original nails, using some shavings from the originals. These replicas are considered to be 3rd Class relics, and were only given to those considered to be most deserving. This particular replica went to France, where it was put in this reliquary along with the hand made decorations you can see. The small paper banner speaks of its "contact" with the original relic. This holy shrine measures 11" X 9.5" X 2", was sealed during the 19th century, and has a hook for hanging. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have.
