A fabulous Elizabethan period English reliquary ring. Made of solid 22 carat gold, the ring has a tapering body with stunningly finely impressed and engraved shoulders, and its raised oval head is set with what is said to be a relic of the Blood of Christ. It's inside a foiled rock crystal cabochon reliquary, making it appear to hover within the stone.
Relics have been claimed throughout the history of Christianity, be it a fragment of bone or textile. Faith in their veracity pales into insignificance in the face of their personal and spiritual meaning, not to mention their historical significance. This is a true museum piece and item of curiosity.
It dates from the mid-late 1500's and is in excellent condition throughout, with only the lightest signs of wear/ageing. It weighs 3.1 grams, the crystal measures 9 x 8 mm and its ring size is 8 ¼ US / Q UK - not resizeable due to its age.
