    The Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is an abbey located within the city and island of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, in the department of Manche.
    This St. Michael bronze pendant is one from a small collection acquired from Cardinal Bonaventura Cerretti by my mother after the Cardinals death in 1933; they will each be listed separately.
    When Louis XI of France founded the Order of Saint Michael in 1469, Mont Saint-Michel became the chapel for the Order and wealthy pilgrims would acquire these pendants (for a generous donation), to protect them on their dangerous return 200-mile journey back to Paris. The approximate translation of the wording on the pendants banner beneath St. Michael is, “IMENSE POWER TO KILL DEMONS”. Possibly from the Scots Gaelic.
    This information is from my mother’s inventory notes; we have no additional provenance.
    This pendant is 2.25-inch-long and 1.75 inches wide. The loop on the back was made to fit a rope or rawhide chord and it will fit any size chain or necklace. This piece is made of bronze, and it weighs 1.5 ounces.
